National IDs and Civil Registration
How do I legally change a name in Zimbabwe?
A practical guide to Zimbabwe legal name changes, distinguishing limited forename alterations from full changes requiring a notarial deed.

A legal name change in Zimbabwe is not simply a request to print different words on an ID. The evidence and cost depend on the scope of the change, the applicant’s age and whether the birth record, surname or complete name is being altered. The Civil Registry Department publishes separate routes for limited alterations and changes supported by a notarial deed.
Define the change precisely
First write down the name currently recorded on the birth certificate and the exact name requested. Decide whether you are correcting an error, changing a forename, changing only a surname, or changing the complete name. A correction restores what should have been recorded originally; a voluntary new name follows a change procedure. Mixing those explanations is a common source of delay.
If this applies to your situation, read our guide on a change of name in Zimbabwe.
For a child under 18, the Department calls for affidavits from both parents or the legal guardian for a forename alteration. An applicant aged 16 or older should also provide the national ID and supporting records such as marriage, academic, baptismal or professional documents. For an adult seeking a complete forename change, the published checklist includes an adult affidavit and fingerprint clearance from the National Fingerprints Bureau or CID.
Complete the formal route when required
For a complete name and surname change, prepare a notarial deed, notice in the Government Gazette, fingerprint clearance and an explanatory affidavit if the applicant is 18 or older. For a surname-only change, the Department lists a notarial deed and Gazette notice. A deed executed abroad must be gazetted in Zimbabwe before use in this process.

A notarial deed should be prepared and executed through a properly qualified notary. Ensure that every old and new name is spelled consistently and that the deed explains the identity link. Follow the publication instructions exactly and retain the original Gazette evidence.
Update the civil record, then linked documents
- Contact the Civil Registry office and confirm which category fits the requested change and where it must be lodged.
- Submit original supporting records and copies, the required affidavits, clearance and publication evidence.
- Review the amended particulars before approval and pay only the prescribed fee.
- Obtain the updated birth certificate or official confirmation of the change.
- Apply to change the national ID using the original change documents, birth certificate and existing ID.
- After the foundational records agree, update the passport, bank, employer, school, tax, medical and other records individually.
The Department publishes US\$10 normal and US\$15 urgent fees for the limited name-alteration service, with three-day and one-day periods. For the notarial-deed name or surname route, it publishes US\$55 normal and US\$60 urgent, also three days or one day. Confirm current tariffs and whether additional document-publication, notary or ID charges apply.

Do not destroy the old-to-new name trail. Certified copies of the deed, Gazette notice and former documents may be needed for qualifications, property and estates. A successful legal change creates continuity: it shows that the old and new names refer to one person rather than erasing the earlier identity.

Frequently asked questions
What documents and requirements are needed for a change of name in Zimbabwe?
The Civil Registry Department does not use one checklist for every name change. The correct documents depend on age and on whether the request affects a forename, surname or the complete name. Begin with the birth certificate because it shows the foundational entry that later IDs and passports follow.

A Zimbabwe name change can involve several places because no single counter performs every step. A complete or surname change may require a notary, the Government Gazette, fingerprint clearance and the Civil Registry Department. The updated national ID is then handled as a linked identity-document service.

Name-change applications are delayed when the requested outcome does not match the legal route or when the documents fail to connect the old identity to the new one. The Civil Registry must preserve a trustworthy history. It will not simply overwrite a name because the applicant now prefers another version.
