National IDs and Civil Registration
What documents and requirements are needed for a marriage certificate in Zimbabwe?
Documents for a Zimbabwe marriage certificate, with separate checklists for an upcoming marriage, a duplicate and a record correction.

The right marriage-certificate checklist depends on the task. Documents used to enter a new marriage are not the same as those used to request a duplicate or correct a registered error. Tell the marriage officer or Civil Registry Department which service you need before gathering papers.
For a new marriage
Zimbabwe law recognises civil, customary and qualified civil marriages. An authorised marriage officer should give you the current checklist for the chosen type and venue. At a minimum, be prepared to prove each party’s identity and legal ability to marry with original national IDs or passports and any status records the officer requests.
If a person was married before, take the official document showing how that marriage ended: for example, a final divorce order or the former spouse’s death certificate. If names have changed, carry the marriage, notarial deed, Gazette or civil-record evidence linking the versions. Witnesses should bring valid identification and meet the marriage officer’s requirements.
If this applies to your situation, read our guide on obtain a Zimbabwe marriage certificate.
Do not rely on an internet checklist alone for solemnisation. Confirm notices, appointments, witnesses, fees and original-document rules directly with the authorised officer. Requirements may differ by marriage type and circumstances.
For a duplicate certificate
The Civil Registry Department’s published duplicate service asks for:
- The applicant’s national ID or passport.
- A copy of the marriage certificate, if available; or
- The date of marriage, if the copy is unavailable.
- The prescribed fee, published as US\$10.
Improve the search by bringing both spouses’ full names as registered, the place, marriage type, marriage officer and entry number if known. The Department publishes completion within 24 hours at Central Registry. Confirm the current fee and access arrangements before travelling.

For a correction
The Department’s Central Registry correction checklist includes original birth certificates and copies, IDs or passports, the original marriage certificate, an affidavit and an addendum. A notarial deed and Government Gazette notice may be needed when the issue involves a formal name change. It publishes US\$10 and a 24-hour period for a straightforward correction.
The evidence must match the error. A birth certificate can support the spelling or date that existed before marriage; a notarial deed can support a later legal name change. An affidavit explains the request but does not by itself override an official record.
Prepare the file responsibly
Compare all names, dates and document numbers before the appointment. Keep originals separate from photocopies. If a foreign document is involved, ask whether authentication or translation is required. Never alter a certificate, divorce order or ID to remove a mismatch.
At the counter, state the service clearly and review the located register entry. Pay only against an official receipt. When the certificate is issued, check it immediately. The strongest application is not the thickest file; it is the one that proves identity, marital status and the exact registered marriage without leaving staff to guess which record belongs to you. Place originals in a labelled sleeve and keep a separate checklist of anything the office retains. That makes collection and later follow-up easier. Bring a spare photocopy set.

A Zimbabwe marriage certificate must follow a marriage lawfully solemnised and entered in the marriage register. The Marriages Act recognises civil, customary and qualified civil marriages.
