National IDs and Civil Registration
What documents and requirements are needed for a replacement national ID in Zimbabwe?
A document-by-document checklist for replacing Zimbabwean metal, plastic and green paper IDs, including proof of changes and safe preparation.

The replacement checklist for a Zimbabwe national ID is not identical for every document. Start by identifying whether you held a metal ID, plastic card or green paper ID, and whether it was lost, stolen or merely damaged. Then confirm the current checklist with the Civil Registry office that will process the request.
Lost green paper ID
The Civil Registry Department expressly lists the following for a lost green paper ID:
- The applicant’s original birth certificate.
- One copy of that birth certificate.
- A copy of the lost green paper ID.
- The prescribed fee, published as US\$5 for normal processing.
The Department publishes a processing period within 24 hours for this route. A copy of the missing document can be a photocopy retained at home or in another legitimate file. Do not recreate or edit an ID image. If no copy exists, contact the office and ask what record-tracing evidence it will accept.

Lost metal or plastic ID
For lost metal and plastic IDs, the Department’s service page publishes a US\$10 fee but does not provide the same detailed online document list. That is a reason to confirm, not a reason to travel empty-handed. Take the original birth certificate if available, a clear copy, any genuine copy or recorded number of the lost ID, and a police report if the loss was reported. Carry another official document, such as a valid passport, if you have one. The officer will decide what is needed to match you to the national register.
For a damaged ID, bring the damaged original, even if it is broken or faded. It can be important evidence. Package fragments securely and make a copy for your own file.

When personal details also changed
Add the official evidence supporting the change. Depending on the case, this might include a marriage certificate, divorce order, spouse’s death certificate, notarial deed, Government Gazette notice, newspaper notice or fingerprint clearance. A mere affidavit or new preferred spelling does not automatically amend the national record. Ask whether the office will combine the replacement with a change-of-particulars process or require the change first.
Prepare a clean application pack
Put originals and copies in separate sleeves. On a cover sheet, write your full registered name, date of birth, previous ID number if known, document type, current address and reliable contact number. This cover sheet is an organiser, not a substitute for the official form. Check that all names and dates agree.
The applicant should attend personally because identity may be confirmed through questions, fingerprints and a photograph. A relative can help with transport or copies but cannot become the applicant. At the counter, describe the loss truthfully, review the captured information, pay through the official channel and demand a receipt.
Fees and local workflows can change. Before travelling, ask the office to confirm the current amount, currency or payment method, whether a police report is expected, and what to bring when collecting the replacement. Good preparation means proving continuity between you, the lost document and the existing registry entry—not producing the largest possible pile of unrelated papers.

Frequently asked questions
How do I replace a lost or damaged Zimbabwe national ID?
Replacing a Zimbabwe national ID begins with identifying what was lost or damaged. The Civil Registry Department publishes different requirements and fees for a metal or plastic card and for the older green paper ID. Tell the officer the correct document type; asking for a generic “new ID” can send you into the wrong process.

A lost or damaged Zimbabwe national ID is replaced through the Civil Registry Department. Its published network includes Central Registry, ten provincial offices, 63 district offices, 206 sub-offices and Zimbabwean foreign missions. That broad network does not guarantee that every counter produces every ID type every day, so verify the specific service before paying for transport.

A replacement ID can be delayed even though you were previously registered. The Civil Registry must still prove that the person requesting the document is the person attached to the existing record. Most problems fall into four groups: insufficient evidence of the old identity, conflicting particulars, an uncompleted legal change, or an operational failure during capture or production.
