An ordinary Zimbabwean passport is the standard option when you do not need priority processing. The application is handled by the Civil Registry Department through passport offices in Zimbabwe, while citizens abroad may begin at a Zimbabwean embassy or consulate. Prepare carefully: the passport will reproduce your official identity, so disagreements between your birth certificate, national ID and previous passport should be resolved before capture.

Step 1: check your underlying records

Read every name, date and place on your long birth certificate and national identity document. Applicants aged 16 or older are generally required to present a Zimbabwean national ID; a driver’s licence is not treated as a substitute by the published embassy checklists. If you already hold or previously held a passport, include it even when expired. Take a marriage certificate, divorce order, citizenship certificate or court order when it explains your current legal particulars.

For a first passport, ask the intended office whether it wants originals plus copies of every record. Do not correct a spelling by writing on a certificate or by entering a preferred version on the form. A material mismatch can require a separate Civil Registry correction.

If this applies to your situation, read our guide on ordinary passport in Zimbabwe.

Step 2: prepare the application pack

Take the official passport photographs required by the office. Published mission guidance commonly specifies two identical colour photographs, approximately 3.5 cm by 4.5 cm, with a plain white background and dark upper clothing. Glasses, jewellery, covered ears, heavy make-up or an unsuitable pose can cause rejection. Use a studio familiar with Zimbabwean passport specifications, but still compare the photographs with the official instructions.

Arrange your originals and copies separately. Include proof of Zimbabwean citizenship if you acquired it by registration, descent or naturalisation, or if the office has asked for confirmation.

Step 3: submit and complete identity capture

  1. Use the official Civil Registry passport portal or contact the passport office to confirm the current booking and submission route.
  2. Attend the authorised office when instructed. Complete the official form accurately and do not sign a section intended for an officer or witness.
  3. Present the original documents for examination and complete the photograph, fingerprint, signature or other biometric stages required.
  4. Review the captured names, date of birth, sex and place details before the application is finalised.
  5. Pay through the approved channel and retain the official receipt and application reference.

The 2024 fee regulations state US\$150 for an ordinary passport and a further US\$20 for the QR code used with an electronically readable application. That produces the US\$170 total quoted by several official missions. Confirm the current amount and payment method immediately before applying.

Step 4: track and collect

Use the reference issued for your application, not only your name, when following up. The Civil Registry portal advertises application tracking, although the status options and notification method can change. Do not buy a flight around an estimated completion date. When notified, take the collection slip, receipt, national ID and any old passport the office requires for cancellation.

Inspect the new passport at collection. Check the spelling, photograph, date of birth, passport number and validity dates before leaving. If anything is wrong, report it immediately rather than travelling with an inconsistent document.

Frequently asked questions

What documents and requirements are needed for ordinary passport in Zimbabwe?

The ordinary-passport checklist is designed to prove three things: your birth record, your present identity and your Zimbabwean citizenship. The exact pack changes with age, marital history, place of birth and whether this is a first passport or a replacement. Take originals and clear photocopies unless the receiving office expressly says otherwise.

Where can I apply for an ordinary Zimbabwean passport, and can it be done online?

Apply for an ordinary Zimbabwean passport only through the Civil Registry Department or an authorised Zimbabwean diplomatic mission. The right location depends on whether you are inside Zimbabwe, temporarily abroad or normally resident in another country. Online tools can begin or track the process, but a passport application still involves identity and biometric checks that cannot safely be delegated to an informal agent.

What can delay or cause rejection of ordinary passport in Zimbabwe?

An ordinary passport application is usually delayed because the Civil Registry cannot complete one of its checks, not because an officer has simply decided to ignore it. The fastest response is to identify the exact failed stage: document verification, citizenship confirmation, biometric capture, payment, production or collection. Each needs a different remedy.
