What documents and requirements are needed for ordinary passport in Zimbabwe?

The ordinary-passport checklist is designed to prove three things: your birth record, your present identity and your Zimbabwean citizenship. The exact pack changes with age, marital history, place of birth and whether this is a first passport or a replacement. Take originals and clear photocopies unless the receiving office expressly says otherwise.

Core documents for an adult

Official Zimbabwean missions publish the following recurring requirements:

• An original long birth certificate and a photocopy.
• A Zimbabwean national identity document for an applicant aged 16 or older, plus a copy.
• A current or expired Zimbabwean passport, if one has previously been issued.
• Two identical colour passport photographs meeting the required dimensions and background rules.
• A marriage certificate or divorce order where it explains a surname or marital-status change.
• A Zimbabwean citizenship certificate where citizenship was acquired by registration or must otherwise be proved.

A driver’s licence is useful in daily life but is not listed as a replacement for the national ID in passport applications. If the passport was lost or stolen, add the original police report or affidavit required by the office; that case is processed as a replacement rather than an ordinary first application.

What each record must show

The long birth certificate links you to the civil register and your parentage. The national ID connects that civil record to your current registered identity. A previous passport lets the Department trace earlier travel-document history and cancel an unexpired document when appropriate. Marriage, divorce, guardianship and citizenship documents explain legal facts that the birth certificate alone cannot establish.

Compare the documents line by line. A missing middle name, reversed date, different surname spelling or unexplained place of birth can lead to referral. Photocopies should show all edges and security details; cropped phone screenshots are poor substitutes. Foreign-issued marriage, divorce, custody or name-change records may require authentication before Zimbabwean authorities accept them.

Photograph and personal-attendance requirements

Mission guidance generally calls for two colour photographs around 3.5 cm wide by 4.5 cm high, taken against a white background while the applicant wears dark upper clothing. Instructions may prohibit glasses, jewellery and clothing that hides the neck; long hair may need to be tied back so the face and ears are visible. Confirm the specification with the office before paying a studio.

The applicant must attend when identity, fingerprints, signature and photographs are captured or authenticated. Fees and final preparation

Statutory Instrument 1 of 2024 lists US\$150 for an ordinary passport plus US\$20 for the application QR code. Offices abroad may add a separate consular or administration charge in local currency. Fees and collection arrangements can change, so request a current written schedule from the exact office you will use.

Place originals in one sleeve and copies in another. Add the booking confirmation, payment instructions and a written list of your previous passport number and reliable telephone contact.
