How do I change the name on a Zimbabwean passport?

Change a name on a Zimbabwe passport by completing the lawful name process, updating identity records and applying for a new passport with connecting evidence.

A name is not edited inside an existing Zimbabwean passport. You first establish the lawful new name and align the underlying civil or identity records, then apply for a newly issued passport. The evidence differs for marriage, divorce, adoption, guardianship and a voluntary change by notarial deed.

For a surname adopted through marriage, use the official marriage certificate. After divorce, the divorce order and Civil Registry instructions determine how you return to or retain a surname. A voluntary change may require a notarial deed, publication and registration before the Civil Registry updates the national identity record. A court order may govern an adoption or guardianship-related change.

Foreign-issued marriage, divorce, custody or name-change documents may need authentication by the country of origin and its foreign-affairs authority before use in a Zimbabwean application. Ask the Zimbabwean mission or Civil Registry for the exact legalisation route.

Update the records in the right order

  1. Obtain the final original document creating or recognising the new name.
  2. Ask the Civil Registry which underlying record must be amended or annotated.
  3. Update the national ID where required so it supports the passport name.
  4. Compare the updated ID, birth certificate and change document for spelling and name order.
  5. Apply for a new passport using the official renewal or replacement process.

Published mission guidance for married applicants may expect the national ID to carry the married surname. Applying with an old-name ID and a new-name form can cause referral. Do not assume the passport office will update every other record during passport capture.

Prepare the passport file

Take the original long birth certificate, updated national ID, current or expired passport, two compliant photographs and the original name-change evidence, with copies. Add citizenship evidence where applicable. If the old passport was lost, include the police report and follow the lost-passport procedure as well.

Attend personally for document authentication and biometric capture. Enter previous names wherever the form asks; concealing the earlier identity can prevent the records from linking. Review the new spelling carefully before authorising production.

Manage the old and new identity

The old passport may need official cancellation. Copy its biographical page and any valid visas first. Ask each foreign visa authority, bank, employer, school and airline what evidence it needs to connect the old and new names. The marriage certificate, deed or court order often remains important even after the new passport is issued.

Fees follow the passport category. The 2024 schedule lists US\$150 ordinary or US\$250 emergency, plus the US\$20 QR charge, while overseas missions can add administration fees. Confirm current totals.

At collection, compare the new passport with the updated ID and legal change document. A lawful paper trail from birth name to current name is the goal. Changing only the passport while leaving contradictory core records creates future problems rather than solving them.

Retain certified copies of the linking instrument because future renewals may again require evidence explaining why earlier passports and visas carry a different name.

Frequently asked questions

What documents and requirements are needed for passport name change in Zimbabwe?

To receive a Zimbabwean passport in a different name, you need evidence of the old identity, evidence that the new name is lawful and records showing that the Civil Registry has accepted the change. The passport application does not replace the legal name-change process.

Where can I change the name on a Zimbabwean passport, and can it be done online?

A Zimbabwean passport name change is completed through more than one service. The lawful change or supporting event must be recorded first, the national identity record may need updating, and only then can a passport office issue a new passport. The Civil Registry passport portal may begin the final application, but it does not replace a notary, court, civil-registration or identity-document step.

What can delay or cause rejection of passport name change in Zimbabwe?

A passport name-change application is delayed when the evidence shows that a person uses a new name but does not yet prove that Zimbabwe’s official records recognise it. The Passport Office must connect the old passport, civil record, national ID and legal change into one identity history.
