A Zimbabwean passport name change is completed through more than one service. The lawful change or supporting event must be recorded first, the national identity record may need updating, and only then can a passport office issue a new passport. The Civil Registry passport portal may begin the final application, but it does not replace a notary, court, civil-registration or identity-document step.

Begin with the authority for the name change

For marriage or divorce, obtain the official certificate or final order from the responsible registrar or court. For a voluntary new name, consult a Zimbabwean notary about the notarial deed, publication and registration requirements. For adoption, guardianship or another court-directed change, use the sealed order and ask the Civil Registry how the birth and identity records must be updated.

Do not start at a photo studio or commercial passport agent. First establish which document lawfully connects the old and new identities.

Update Civil Registry records

Visit or contact the Civil Registry office that handles changes of particulars and national IDs. Ask whether the birth record, national ID or both must be updated before the passport application. Published embassy guidance may require a married applicant’s national ID to bear the married surname.

If you are outside Zimbabwe, contact the Zimbabwean embassy or consulate. A mission may authenticate passport forms and foreign-issued documents, but some underlying ID changes are completed only in Zimbabwe. Ask this before booking an embassy appointment or sending originals.

Apply for the new passport

Once the identity path is accepted, use an authorised passport office or the official Civil Registry portal. The portal advertises online application and tracking, but expect to attend for original-document review and biometrics. Take the long birth certificate, updated ID, old passport, name-change evidence, citizenship document where applicable and compliant photographs.

An overseas mission may complete the form and fingerprints, then require the applicant to send the authenticated pack to a nominee in Zimbabwe. Foreign marriage, divorce, custody or name-change documents may need legalisation in the issuing country before the mission will accept them.

What can be done online

You may be able to register the passport application, book, pay or track digitally, depending on the live portal. You cannot safely complete the entire legal change by typing a new name into an online passport form. The officer must connect the new name to an authoritative record and to the person’s biometrics.

Avoid websites promising a “same-day online name change” after uploading a passport copy. Identity documents and court records should go only through official or professionally authorised channels.

Choose offices in the right sequence

Ask the Civil Registry to give you the sequence for your case: legal instrument, record amendment, ID update, passport application, old-passport cancellation and collection. Keep receipts and copies from every stage. If the passport name must change urgently for travel, obtain a realistic timeline for the underlying update first. Paying for emergency passport production cannot accelerate an unresolved legal name change.

Use the same spelling on every booking and payment record throughout that sequence.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the name on a Zimbabwean passport?

A name is not edited inside an existing Zimbabwean passport. You first establish the lawful new name and align the underlying civil or identity records, then apply for a newly issued passport. The evidence differs for marriage, divorce, adoption, guardianship and a voluntary change by notarial deed.

What documents and requirements are needed for passport name change in Zimbabwe?

To receive a Zimbabwean passport in a different name, you need evidence of the old identity, evidence that the new name is lawful and records showing that the Civil Registry has accepted the change. The passport application does not replace the legal name-change process.

What can delay or cause rejection of passport name change in Zimbabwe?

A passport name-change application is delayed when the evidence shows that a person uses a new name but does not yet prove that Zimbabwe’s official records recognise it. The Passport Office must connect the old passport, civil record, national ID and legal change into one identity history.
