To receive a Zimbabwean passport in a different name, you need evidence of the old identity, evidence that the new name is lawful and records showing that the Civil Registry has accepted the change. The passport application does not replace the legal name-change process.

Core passport documents

Prepare originals and copies of:

  • Your long Zimbabwean birth certificate.
  • Your national identity document, updated to the name required by the Civil Registry where applicable.
  • Your current or expired Zimbabwean passport.
  • Two identical colour passport photographs that meet the current specification.
  • A citizenship certificate if your status was acquired by registration, descent or naturalisation, or confirmation is requested.
  • The official document linking your former and current names.

If the old passport is lost, add the police report or affidavit and disclose the loss. A name-change application does not remove the lost-passport requirements.

Evidence for different types of change

For a marriage-related surname, take the original marriage certificate. For a divorce-related change, take the final divorce order and any Civil Registry evidence requested to restore or confirm the chosen surname. For a voluntary change, prepare the registered notarial deed and evidence of any required publication or registration. For adoption, guardianship or a court-directed change, take the sealed court order and updated civil records.

If this applies to your situation, read our guide on change the name on a Zimbabwean passport.

A simple affidavit saying that you “are now known as” another name may explain usage, but it does not automatically amend a statutory identity record. Social-media profiles, school certificates and employer letters are not substitutes for the legal instrument.

Foreign documents

Official embassy guidance warns that marriage certificates, divorce orders, guardianship orders and similar identity documents obtained outside Zimbabwe may need authentication in the country of origin and endorsement through the appropriate foreign-affairs process. Contact the mission before paying for translations or stamps, because the chain differs by country.

Take proof of lawful residence when applying abroad if the mission requires it. The mission may authenticate the pack, while a nominee submits it in Zimbabwe.

Consistency checks

Write the former name and new name exactly as each appears in the relevant record. Check spacing, hyphens, middle names and surname order. If the updated ID has not yet been issued, ask whether its receipt or confirmation is sufficient; do not assume.

The applicant must attend for form completion, signature, photograph and fingerprints. Review the captured name before submission. Pay the ordinary or emergency passport fee through the approved channel and retain the receipt.

Keep the linking evidence

An unexpired old passport must be cancelled as instructed. Copy its details and visas beforehand. Even after receiving the new passport, keep certified copies of the marriage certificate, deed or court order for visa transfers, banks and educational records.

Before travelling, request a case-specific checklist from the exact office. The strongest application shows an unbroken, legally documented path from the old passport name to the updated national identity and the new passport name.

After collection, update records methodically and keep a list of institutions still using the former name; this reduces later confusion when accounts or qualifications are compared.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the name on a Zimbabwean passport?

A name is not edited inside an existing Zimbabwean passport. You first establish the lawful new name and align the underlying civil or identity records, then apply for a newly issued passport. The evidence differs for marriage, divorce, adoption, guardianship and a voluntary change by notarial deed.

Where can I change the name on a Zimbabwean passport, and can it be done online?

A Zimbabwean passport name change is completed through more than one service. The lawful change or supporting event must be recorded first, the national identity record may need updating, and only then can a passport office issue a new passport. The Civil Registry passport portal may begin the final application, but it does not replace a notary, court, civil-registration or identity-document step.

What can delay or cause rejection of passport name change in Zimbabwe?

A passport name-change application is delayed when the evidence shows that a person uses a new name but does not yet prove that Zimbabwe’s official records recognise it. The Passport Office must connect the old passport, civil record, national ID and legal change into one identity history.
