How do I apply for a Zimbabwean passport from abroad?
Apply for a Zimbabwe passport abroad through the responsible mission, authenticate the application, appoint a nominee where required and plan cancellation and delivery.

Zimbabweans abroad usually begin a passport application at the embassy or consulate responsible for their country of residence. The mission confirms identity, examines originals and completes the official form or biometric steps. In several published mission workflows, processing and issuance still occur in Zimbabwe, so the applicant then sends the authenticated pack to a relative or authorised nominee.
Contact the correct mission
Find the official mission website and confirm that your address falls within its consular jurisdiction. Ask for the passport appointment link, document checklist, photograph specification, local administration fee and accepted payment method. Do not travel to a mission in another country without confirming that it will serve you.
Tell the mission whether the application is a renewal, first passport, lost-passport replacement, child application or name change. Each adds evidence.

Attend with originals and copies
Published embassy checklists commonly require the long birth certificate, Zimbabwean national ID for applicants aged 16 or older, current or expired passport, two compliant photographs and any marriage, divorce or citizenship evidence. Take proof of lawful residence if requested. A lost passport needs the police report or affidavit; a child needs a parent’s or guardian’s identification and lawful consent.
The applicant appears personally for form completion, fingerprinting and authentication. Mission guidance warns that a police station or notary cannot substitute for the consular biometric stage.
Complete the Zimbabwe submission route
- Receive the official application form at the mission and complete it under instruction.
- Have the photographs, fingerprints and supporting copies authenticated or stamped.
- Obtain the mission receipt and any nominee or power-of-attorney form.
- Inventory the complete pack and send it securely to the named relative or nominee in Zimbabwe.
- The nominee submits it to an authorised Passport Office and pays the processing fee.
- Obtain the Zimbabwe application reference for tracking.
- When required, present the old valid passport to the mission for cancellation and send proof to the nominee.
- Arrange secure return of the new passport.
Some missions may use a different route, so follow their current instructions rather than treating this sequence as universal.

Budget and timing
The 2024 regulations list US\$150 ordinary or US\$250 emergency processing plus US\$20 for the application QR code. Add the mission’s administration fee, photographs, certification and two-way courier costs. Ask which amounts are paid abroad and which in Zimbabwe.
Allow time for the mission appointment, international delivery, submission, production, cancellation, collection and return courier. An emergency production category does not make the couriers instantaneous. Some mission-completed forms expire after six months, so do not hold the pack.
Use tracked delivery and keep copies, but never send irreplaceable originals unless instructed. The successful diaspora application is a controlled chain of custody from the applicant, through the mission and nominee, to the Passport Office and back.
Give the nominee a written checklist and require confirmation of every page submitted, the amount paid and the collection receipt received. This avoids vague updates such as “it is being processed” and creates a usable trail if the pack must be traced.

An overseas passport application has more failure points than a direct application in Zimbabwe because the file may pass through a mission, courier, nominee, payment counter, Passport Office and cancellation process. Map those hand-offs and keep evidence for each one.
