Passports and Travel Documents
What documents and requirements are needed for passport application abroad in Zimbabwe?
Checklist for Zimbabweans applying for passports abroad, including mission appointments, civil records, residence proof, nominee authority, fees and cancellation.

For a Zimbabwean passport application made while you are abroad, you need the ordinary identity documents plus records required by the local mission and by the person who will submit or collect in Zimbabwe. Confirm the country-specific checklist because consular fees, bookings and transmission arrangements differ.
Identity documents for the mission appointment
Take originals and the number of photocopies the mission requests:
- Your long Zimbabwean birth certificate.
- Your Zimbabwean national ID if you are 16 or older.
- Your current or expired Zimbabwean passport and a copy of the biographical page.
- Two identical colour photographs meeting the mission’s size, background and appearance rules.
- A marriage certificate or divorce order where relevant to the name used.
- A citizenship certificate where citizenship by descent, registration or naturalisation must be shown.
- Your valid residence permit or other proof of lawful status in the country of residence, if requested.
For a lost passport, add the local police report or affidavit. Ask whether it must be translated or authenticated. For a child, add the child’s records, the parent’s or guardian’s original ID or valid passport and any Section 5, guardianship or death-certificate evidence.

Consular application requirements
Book through the official mission system and appear personally. The mission may issue the P1 form only at the appointment, examine originals, stamp photographs and copies, and take fingerprints. Some official pages state that downloaded forms are not accepted. Follow the current instruction rather than printing a form from an unofficial site.
Pay the mission’s administration or handling fee in the method it specifies. Keep the consular receipt; it is separate from the processing payment made in Zimbabwe.
Nominee and submission documents
Where the mission returns the completed pack for Zimbabwe processing, include:
You may also need to know can delay or cause rejection of passport application abroad in Zimbabwe.
- The original stamped application form.
- Authenticated supporting copies and photographs.
- The original mission receipt or the version the mission instructs you to send.
- A letter authorising the named relative or nominee to submit and collect.
- The nominee’s details and any prescribed appointment-of-relative form.
Use a trackable courier and keep a scanned inventory. Passport forms completed at some missions expire after six months.
Fees, old-passport cancellation and return
The 2024 regulations set US\$150 for ordinary or US\$250 for emergency processing, plus US\$20 for the application QR code. Confirm the current total and who pays it in Zimbabwe. Do not send cash loosely in a courier pack.
If the old passport is still valid, the new one may not be released until the old one is cancelled. Ask whether you must attend the mission again or post it with a prepaid return envelope. Keep copies of valid visas before cancellation.
Finally, agree on a secure return method for the new passport. The complete requirements are therefore not merely documents: appointment, personal attendance, authenticated pack, lawful nominee, Zimbabwe payment, cancellation and controlled delivery all form part of the overseas application.
Before dispatch, place copies in a separate secure location and write down the mission’s emergency contact. If the courier loses the pack, those records allow the mission and nominee to identify exactly what was sent without reconstructing the application from memory.

Frequently asked questions
How do I apply for a Zimbabwean passport from abroad?
Zimbabweans abroad usually begin a passport application at the embassy or consulate responsible for their country of residence. The mission confirms identity, examines originals and completes the official form or biometric steps. In several published mission workflows, processing and issuance still occur in Zimbabwe, so the applicant then sends the authenticated pack to a relative or authorised nominee.

Apply through the Zimbabwean embassy or consulate whose jurisdiction covers the country where you live. Do not assume that the nearest building geographically will accept the case; some missions serve several countries, while others require proof that you reside within their assigned region.

An overseas passport application has more failure points than a direct application in Zimbabwe because the file may pass through a mission, courier, nominee, payment counter, Passport Office and cancellation process. Map those hand-offs and keep evidence for each one.
