Passports and Travel Documents
How do I renew a Zimbabwean passport?
Renew a Zimbabwean passport by checking validity, preparing civil records, completing biometric capture, paying the correct category and cancelling the old passport.

Zimbabwe does not simply place a new validity stamp in an old passport. A renewal is an application for a newly produced passport, supported by the existing passport and your underlying civil records. Start early enough to keep the old document available for visas and travel until the office tells you when it must be cancelled.
Decide when to renew
Check the passport’s expiry date, physical condition and blank pages, then review the destination’s entry rule. Many countries and airlines expect several months of validity beyond the trip, even though the Zimbabwean document has not yet expired. Also renew when the biographical page is damaged, the document is full, or your lawful name has changed. A lost passport follows a replacement process, not a routine renewal.
Build the renewal file
Published Zimbabwean mission requirements commonly ask for the original long birth certificate, national ID for applicants aged 16 or older, current or expired passport, two compliant colour photographs and copies. Add a marriage certificate, divorce order, citizenship certificate or authenticated foreign record when it explains the particulars to appear in the new passport.
If this applies to your situation, read our guide on passport renewal in Zimbabwe.
Compare the old passport with the birth certificate and ID. If the passport contains an old surname but the new application uses a married name, make sure the national ID and supporting record establish the change. Do not wait until biometric capture to reveal a discrepancy.
Complete the new application
- Confirm the authorised passport office, booking method and current checklist.
- Register through the official portal if instructed and keep the reference.
- Attend personally with originals, copies and photographs.
- Complete the official form and undergo fingerprint, photograph and signature capture.
- Review the proposed biographical details before submitting.
- Select ordinary or emergency processing based on a realistic travel date.
- Pay through the approved channel and retain the receipt and collection slip.
Under the 2024 fee regulations, the ordinary category is US\$150 and the emergency category US\$250, with a further US\$20 QR-code charge. Overseas missions may add their own administration fee. Confirm the live tariff rather than relying on an old receipt.

Manage the old passport properly
An unexpired passport normally has to be cancelled before the new one is released. Inside Zimbabwe, follow the collection office’s instruction. Abroad, the mission may cancel it and provide evidence to a nominee collecting the new passport in Zimbabwe. Do not destroy, punch or mark the document yourself.
Ask whether valid visas in the old passport remain usable alongside the new one; that decision belongs to the issuing foreign authority, not the passport office. Keep copies of the biographical page and any important visas before cancellation.

At collection, check the new photograph, names, date and place of birth, passport number, issue date and expiry date. Update airlines, banks, visa portals or employers only after confirming the document is correct. Early preparation protects both travel plans and the evidence needed to trace the renewal.
Store the cancelled passport separately because its visas and travel history may still be needed as supporting evidence.

Frequently asked questions
What documents and requirements are needed for passport renewal in Zimbabwe?
A Zimbabwean passport renewal requires more than the expiring passport. The Civil Registry must reconnect the application to your birth, identity and citizenship records before issuing a new document. Bring the complete evidence even if none of your details has changed since the last passport.

Renew a Zimbabwean passport through a Civil Registry passport office or, if you live abroad, through the Zimbabwean embassy or consulate responsible for your area. The official online portal can support registration and tracking, but renewal is not a mail-only transaction: officers must authenticate records and capture or verify the applicant’s biometrics.
Read the full guideWhat can delay or cause rejection of passport renewal in Zimbabwe?
A renewal can take longer than a first-time applicant expects because possession of an old passport does not remove the Civil Registry’s duty to verify the current identity. The old document, birth certificate and national ID must form one consistent history. Work out where that chain breaks before starting another application.
