Passports and Travel Documents
What documents and requirements are needed for passport renewal in Zimbabwe?
Zimbabwe passport renewal checklist explaining the role of the old passport, birth certificate, national ID, photos, citizenship and name-change records.

A Zimbabwean passport renewal requires more than the expiring passport. The Civil Registry must reconnect the application to your birth, identity and citizenship records before issuing a new document. Bring the complete evidence even if none of your details has changed since the last passport.
Standard adult renewal checklist
Prepare originals and clear photocopies of:
- Your long Zimbabwean birth certificate.
- Your Zimbabwean national identity document if you are 16 or older.
- Your current or expired passport, including a copy of the biographical page.
- Two identical colour passport photographs that satisfy the receiving office’s current specification.
- Your marriage certificate or divorce order where a surname or marital-history question applies.
- Your citizenship certificate if you became a citizen by registration, descent or naturalisation, or the office asks for it.
Embassy guidance expressly says a driver’s licence is not a substitute for the national ID. If the old passport is lost or stolen, add the original police report or affidavit and use the lost-passport replacement route. If it is damaged, keep and present it rather than discarding it.

Photograph rules
Several missions specify two colour photographs approximately 3.5 cm by 4.5 cm, a strictly white background and dark upper clothing. Glasses, jewellery, polo-necks, visible shadows or hair covering the face and ears may be unacceptable. Requirements can be updated, so obtain the current photo sheet from the office and show it to the studio.
When your details have changed
A renewal cannot lawfully print a new name without evidence. For a marriage-related surname, take the official marriage certificate and ensure the identity record meets the office’s instructions. A divorce does not automatically decide which surname appears; take the divorce order and proof of the lawful identity you now use. A notarial name change or foreign court record may require registration or authentication before the passport application.
Resolve conflicting dates or spellings in the civil record first. An affidavit can explain the history, but it does not automatically amend the birth register or national ID.

Attendance, fees and collection
The applicant must attend for original-document authentication and biometric capture. When applying abroad, also take proof of lawful residence if the mission requests it, pay the local consular charge and complete any nominee authorisation used to submit the pack in Zimbabwe.
Statutory Instrument 1 of 2024 sets US\$150 for an ordinary passport or US\$250 for an emergency passport, plus US\$20 for the application QR code. Ask the exact office which total and payment method currently apply.
Keep the old passport available for cancellation. A still-valid document may need to be cancelled before the new passport can be collected, including through an embassy when the applicant is overseas. Bring the receipt, collection slip, national ID and old passport when instructed.
Before submitting, make one final comparison across all records. The same spelling, name order and birth date should appear everywhere. A well-organised renewal file allows the officer to verify continuity quickly and reduces the risk of a new passport carrying an error copied from an older document.

Frequently asked questions
How do I renew a Zimbabwean passport?
Zimbabwe does not simply place a new validity stamp in an old passport. A renewal is an application for a newly produced passport, supported by the existing passport and your underlying civil records. Start early enough to keep the old document available for visas and travel until the office tells you when it must be cancelled.

Renew a Zimbabwean passport through a Civil Registry passport office or, if you live abroad, through the Zimbabwean embassy or consulate responsible for your area. The official online portal can support registration and tracking, but renewal is not a mail-only transaction: officers must authenticate records and capture or verify the applicant’s biometrics.

A renewal can take longer than a first-time applicant expects because possession of an old passport does not remove the Civil Registry’s duty to verify the current identity. The old document, birth certificate and national ID must form one consistent history. Work out where that chain breaks before starting another application.
