Passports and Travel Documents
Where can I apply for an emergency Zimbabwean passport, and can it be done online?
Where to request an emergency Zimbabwe passport, how the official portal fits in and why biometric capture and document checks still require attendance.

Emergency Zimbabwean passports are issued through authorised Civil Registry passport offices, not travel agents, airlines or ordinary immigration counters. If you are abroad, a Zimbabwean embassy or consulate can explain whether it starts the application locally or authenticates a form that must be processed in Zimbabwe. Confirm the route before committing to travel.
Inside Zimbabwe
Use the official Civil Registry passport portal or the Department’s published contacts to identify a passport office offering emergency processing. Not every service point has the same production capacity or daily cut-off. Ask the office:
- whether emergency applications are being accepted that day;
- whether booking or online registration is required;
- what turnaround is currently being quoted;
- where payment and biometric capture occur; and
- whether collection will be at the same site.
Large passport offices may offer the category more consistently, but do not assume Harare is the only option. The safest location is one that confirms it can capture, process and release your application within the required window.

Can the emergency application be completed online?
The official Civil Registry website advertises online passport applications and application tracking. Use it for the steps it actually presents, retain the generated reference and follow its instruction about attendance. An online form does not remove the need to authenticate original documents or capture secure biometrics. Expect to appear in person for fingerprints, photograph, signature or officer verification.
Check that the web address ends in \`civilregistry.gov.zw\`. Urgent applicants are particularly vulnerable to copied websites and social-media accounts promising guaranteed passports after an electronic transfer. Do not upload identity records or pay an individual unless the instruction comes through the official service.
Applying while abroad
Contact the Zimbabwean mission responsible for where you live. Published mission procedures show that applicants may need an appointment for the official P1 form, fingerprints, photographs and authentication. The completed pack may then need to reach a nominated relative in Zimbabwe for submission and payment. Other missions may operate differently, so request a current country-specific checklist.
You may also need to know can delay or cause rejection of emergency passport in Zimbabwe.
An embassy appointment is not necessarily the beginning of a 48-hour clock. Time spent sending documents to Zimbabwe, clearing payment, cancelling an old passport and returning the new document must be added. If your only objective is an urgent one-way return to Zimbabwe, ask whether a temporary travel document is more appropriate. It is not a substitute for onward international travel.
Make the location decision realistically
Compare three dates: the office’s earliest appointment, the quoted production time and the time required for collection or courier delivery. Carry the long birth certificate, national ID, old passport, compliant photographs and case-specific evidence. Ask whether proof of urgency is needed and what happens if production misses the estimate.
Pay the official emergency fee only after the office accepts the application category. The current regulation lists US\$250 plus a US\$20 QR charge, while overseas missions can impose separate administration charges. Online preparation can accelerate the process; secure issuance still depends on an authorised office and personal verification.
Keep the office’s written instructions with your travel file so a later change in location or collection time can be verified quickly.

Frequently asked questions
How do I apply for an emergency Zimbabwean passport?
An emergency Zimbabwean passport is a full passport processed through a priority category. It is not the same as a temporary travel document, which is generally issued abroad for a limited one-way return to Zimbabwe. Choose emergency processing only after confirming that the office can meet your travel date and that your identity records are complete.

An emergency-passport application uses the normal identity checklist plus the priority processing category. The higher fee buys faster handling; it does not permit missing originals, unresolved names or incomplete biometrics. Build the pack around your particular case rather than copying a stranger’s list.

Emergency processing shortens the production queue; it does not shorten the identity investigation. If the Civil Registry cannot confirm who you are, what name is lawful or what happened to the previous passport, the application can miss the urgent deadline despite the higher fee. Diagnose the obstacle instead of paying another intermediary.
